Pressestimmen

Atkin and James have spent half a century turning the ironically melancholic and the ruefully funny (or is it melancholically ironic and funnily rueful? All permutations of the four, I think) into an art form; Stephen Fry; In these wonderful songs -- timeless and yet so achingly redolent of a time -- the tough, smart, tender elegance of Clive James' intellect and lyricism found its perfect home in the subtle, graceful arms of Pete Atkin's settings;Stuart Maconie

Clive James is a rather belligerent Australian genius well known in Britain in his many guises as a TV critic, literary critic, TV chat show personality, poet, bestselling author and translator of Dante. Less well know is his secret life as a brilliant and prolific songwriter. He is a wordsmith in the Bill Bryant mode, delighting his readers with his dexterous ability to organize thoughts and words into completely new, as yet unseen sentences. (It was he who described Arnold Schwarzenegger as "a brown condom full of walnuts"). He has been on the scene for decades in Britain and just about any Brit will recognize his name but, as far as I know, not so much here in the USA. Musician and singer Peter Atkin is also unknown, so a book about these two unknowns, who are MOST unknown for their songs and music, would seem, on the surface, to be destined to remain unread.Between books one day, I was directed by a friend to read "Loose Canon" by British writer Ian Shircore, and at first I was uninspired by the subject matter - two middle aged men who had spectacularly failed at getting recognized for their songs. However I was quickly sucked in by the author's descriptions and stories of the London folk and rock music scene of the sixties and seventies. Ian Shircore ran a folk club in West London called "The Hanging Lamp" way back at the beginning of the music revolution, and provided a space for a whole litany of now famous names to find their musical feet. His memories these people and this period of history are the background to the tale of Clive James and Pete Atkin who turn out to be the most underappreciated, undervalued troubadours of our time. The book is a loving biography of these two men as well as an unraveling of how their songs were written. The songs are amazing -- funny, moving, sometimes painfully sad . Clive James wrote the lyrics and many of them are written out in this book. They read as brilliant poetry and needing to hear them sung I powered up Youtube and was not disappointed. How have these masterpieces been neglected for so long? How come these two never achieved the fame they so obviously deserved. There is no one answer just many reasons. The book is also rich in delicious trivia – who knew that Angelina Jolie’s uncle wrote 'Wild Thing', or that Irving Berlin stuffed his piano full of feathers to avoid waking the neighbors in his apartment block? Anyone who is interested in the history of music, or would like to know more about how songs are conceived and written will love this book, and the Foreword, by Jeeves and Wooster star, Stephen Fry, is a fantastic piece of writing. The e-book has links to recordings, out takes and interviews. All fascinating.I recommend it. Five stars all the way.
